I love using spring-themed activities to keep my first grade students engaged during this exciting time of the year! Here is a roundup of some of my favorites that I think you’ll love!
Spring-Themed Reading Passages
I’ve used these passages for leveled homework, reading groups, and more! Each week has three levels (emerging, growing, established) that cover the same topic or subject matter. Check out this blog post about how I use these passages in my classroom.
Reader’s Theater Plays
Reader’s Theater Plays are SO MUCH FUN for students to practice reading accurately with expression and fluency. Check out this blog post about using Reader’s Theater Plays in the classroom.
March and April Weather Calendars
We have fun tracking the ever-changing spring weather each day! My students always get so excited to go out and check the weather. Then, we add a cute icon. We’ve also made these calendars part of our math lessons on data by making tally charts and graphs.
Spring Logic Puzzles
I LOVE teaching my students how to do logic puzzles. These simple grid puzzles are a great way to start. I’ve written a blog post about how I use logic puzzles to help my young students develop critical thinking and problem solving skills.
Writing Prompts
These writing prompts are excellent for writing journals, morning work, and early finishers. There are 25 prompts per month, with a student-friendly writing checklist at the bottom of each! Read more about engaging writing activities in my classroom HERE!
Poem of the Week
My poetry routine is one of my favorite things in our classroom! We read and work with poems every day. I tell all about our poem of the week routines HERE and HERE!
List Writing Templates
These lists are inviting for emergent or reluctant writers and can be used during writer’s workshop or literacy stations. They are also great for brainstorming writing ideas!
April/May Sub Plans
I’ve worked to make my sub plan material packs correspond with what we are teaching at that time of the year so that they are helpful for the teacher and engaging for students. In my district, we never know if we will get a sub or who may be covering, so I love to have worksheets and activities that are great practice and review for my students, but do not need a lot of teacher instruction.
I hope you will find some of these resources useful. I know I always love when I can work on standards with my students with a fun seasonal twist!
