Are you looking for homework activities that are able to be completed by all students?
In first grade, there is no one-size-fits-all due to the varied reading readiness levels that my students arrive with!
So, I came up with these differentiated reading passages with comprehension activities at three different levels, while covering the same subject matter or topic. They worked like a charm over the years and I’ll explain them here in case this sounds like something that would work for your classroom!
Three Levels of Passages and Response Activities
Includes various types of questions: multiple choice, short answer, highlight in text, drawing, and more! Levels for each week include emergent, growing, and established.
Each week covers the same topic or subject matter, so if students need to move to a different level, they will still be familiar with the format and presentation.
Fiction Passages with Fun Animal Characters
Modeled after my own pets, Pat the Cat and Tip the Dog go on adventures with their family through the year. Kids love to read about the funny things the animals do and can often make connections to their own pets and activities, such as sledding, gardening, taking trips, and more!
“Will you make more stories about Pat the Cat?” -First grader after week one 🙂

Informational Passages with Engaging Topics for Young Readers
The informational passages cover seasonal and kid-friendly topics including apples, football, snow, holidays, and more! Written in simple language that is easy to understand for young students.
